Leather side up reveals every detail in the groove similar to acrylic platters. Suede side up mellows the sound to omit fatiguing frequencies while still capturing space and timbre. I prefer the suede side up which sounds as smooth as a felt mat while still greatly improving detail and clarity for an overall brilliant sound. A perfect “middle ground” to the platter mat material argument. Because of its two sides and sound characteristics, it is exactly what a curious audiophile should seek out before other upgrades to their system.

I have had the split mat version, black in my case, on a Nottingham Space Deck for several years. During that time I have played with no mat at all, a felt mat, and a nice cork mat. Each time, I have come back to the leather split mat.
The difference in smooth side or suede side up is very subtle with either my Hana ML or the Denon DL103 moving coils. More often than not, its recording pressing dependent. That said, I leave it suede side up.
I am ordering another pat that will be used on an Audio Research table after play with the mat on that table. On this table, it drops the noise floor significantly! Swap side up on this one.
